EXCUSE ME???? WTF did I just read?

So you know how yesterday I was all "Oh, the FF.net thing is irritating, but I'll just back up my fics and say to hell with it"?

Yeah, that was yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday evening I got this ... review. I'm posting the first part of it here because I forgot to save it in its entirety. Which is fine, because really just the first paragraphs are enough to piss you right the hell off.

We have been observing and waiting...Those who are kept waiting to long could
get creative and issue public notices like the one served to the author
Purplerhino (below*) . Consider this a compliment; your work is worth notice
and followup. Not that you need the ego boost. It has not escaped our notice
that your normally finish what you start. You could think about taking it down
or handpicking another author finish it. Otherwise it's just another in a long
line of the unfinished and no one thinks this story deserves to be on that
stagnate list.

*We the public on fanfiction have been waiting for "Purplerhino" to finish
"Perchance To..." for years. The aforementioned author has had adequate time
to finish this story. This is a clear case of story abandonment. *see fine
print below* Further more in the case of said abandoned story: "Perchance
To...", we the public on fanfiction claim ownership of Perchance To... and are
donating its creative entirety to any accomplished author willing to finish
this story.

*thepublicswish does not encourage or condone plagiarism of claimed, completed
material by active or inactive writers on  . The exception being with the
express permission of owner or author(s)of abandoned incomplete material.

this public court finds this arrangement benefits all and could end the
plagiarism epidemic currently causin...

EXCUSE ME????

I'm supposed to be COMPLIMENTED by this? Thank FUCK they pointed that out, because otherwise I'd have just been insulted by the whole freaking thing.

Suggesting that they have the right to put my unfinished fic up for adoption by someone else... I have no words. Just streams of steam coming out of my ears.

If one wanted to be technical about this sort of thing, one might argue that what they want to do is write fanfiction about my fanfiction. And it seems kinda silly to be pissed about it in that light. Somehow I'm still pissed.

I found this tumblr entry which is talking about this same "reviewer" and they express my feelings on it much more eloquently than I'm capable of at the moment: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/thepublicswish

So I read that last night, just before I was about to go to bed. I'd already finished backing up all my FF.net stories and most of my reviews, including the reviews on that particular story. Since "thepublicswish" (and who the FUCK made them the mouth person for public opinion? Oh, that's right, their own egotistical assery) is an anonymous account, I couldn't reply to them directly. So I replied on my FF.net profile with the following statement and apology to the rest of my readers.

My apologies to the thousands of incredibly polite wonderful people who have supported and loved my stories all these years. This is not for you.

Dear thepublicswish,

First of all, thank you for informing me that I should be "complimented" because my story was worth noticing. I barely noticed the compliment beneath the rest of the insulting pile of bullsh*t you just tossed my way. No, I "don't need an ego boost"--I'm absolutely arrogant enough as it is.

Arrogant enough, in fact, to say emphatically that what I write--no one else will finish except for me. No I will not adopt my fic out for someone else to finish. No one else lives in my head, no one else knows what twists and turns that story is supposed to take. I'm not one of those authors who just makes it up as she goes along. I plot my stories out from beginning to end. I have notes and backstory and reams written that YOU WILL NEVER SEE.

And I have all the end chapters. I usually write them about the same time as I'm writing the beginning chapters.

I know how "Dangers Untold" ends. Only two other people in the world have read it. One of them passed away.

I know how "DUST" ends... and I'm still writing it. I have ten chapters that I haven't finished editing.

Yes I do normally finish what I start. And I will finish all of my stories. Someday.

But I have a life. And a job. And a family. I have other hobbies and passions. I have a fickle muse that turns her nose up at me sometimes and refuses to come out and play. And until she does the story will wait.

But it sounds as if you do not have a life, if you have the time to send me such insulting emails. It sounds as if you've never had writer's block--which tells me you're one of those vain authors who are only in it for the reviews. It sounds to me like it's really bothering you an awful lot that I have an uncompleted fic languishing here for you to go back and re-read and enjoy.

So I'm taking it down until it's finished.

I'm taking all of my unfinished fics down, in fact.

Had you worded your email politely, maybe asked me if/when I was planning to finish it, or asked if you could adopt it... you probably wouldn't have pissed me off. Instead you chose to write me the most insulting (and poorly spelled) letter imaginable, implying that not only was I an ego driven author too lazy to get off my butt and write, but that it was an actual CRIME for me to not just hand it over to someone else to finish--and if I wasn't going to do it myself, you were going to do it for me.

Well, I hope you're happy. If anyone asks, you're the reason we can't have nice things.

Sincerely,

KnifeEdge

To everyone else,

I'm sorry. It's been bothering me for years that these stories are unfinished. I do intend to finish them someday, but between the entitlement queen who pissed me off this evening and the rumors of the site going on a censorship spree from this morning... I think it's safer if I take these stories down and post them elsewhere.

If you wondered what happened to "Dangers Untold", "Shove's Tale" and "DUST" ... the first two have been taken down completely and will be reposted when they are finished. I have archived all your reviews, because they have made me smile a great deal over the years and I've appreciated every single one.

"DUST" is up on several prominent Spuffy websites, as well as on my livejournal. You can find me there under the name knifeedgefic.

I have backed up all of my stories and reviews, just in case the censors decide they want to play hardball. I will always be available on Livejournal if you really do miss me.

Did I overreact?

Probably.

Am I somewhat relieved that my two longest "on hiatus" stories are no longer online to garner "PLEASE FINISH THIS!!!" reviews? Yeah, pretty much.

I probably will finish them someday, and then I'll clean them up and repost them here. Or somewhere else. And I feel bad because there are a lot of people who had favorited those stories and who liked to re-read them occasionally, finished or not. But that number wasn't substantial enough to make me leave it up when ass-hats like "thepublicswish" are prepared to offer my fic up to all and sundry to finish.

And if anyone even THINKS about suggesting I adopt out "DUST"... there will be blood.

Crap. I haven't read those other stories yet!

Luckily I am not one of those people who think I can finish another authors work for them. Hell I have stories on my favorites on FF that haven't had an update for YEARS!!! I wait patiently, with the occasional email to the author to check to see if they plan to update. I would never suggest finishing someone else's work. Although there are a few stories out there that after reading I could see a sequel take shape in my mind. But again I would never presume to do so. Nor have I ever even considered asking the author for permission to do so.

But for "thepublicwish" to put that in an review? At the very least a pm would have been more appropriate. Even then it was rude and ill-mannered.
Knife Edge
knifeedgefic at 2012-06-07 14:14 (UTC) (Link)
Well, DUST is up here if you want to read it.

The other two are very old Labyrinth fics of mine. But if you read "Immortal Love" and absolutely must know what happens next, feel free to PM me or email me and I'll send you a copy of what I had posted.

And yes... there are SO many good stories out there that are unfinished and might never be. I re-read them occasionally because I remember them fondly and I hope that they've updated... but no.

I would NEVER be so presumptuous as to presume that I should pick up that story where someone left off. Not unless they specifically asked me to and I had every single note or thought they'd ever had about that story right in front of me for reference and the original author to consult with. And even THEN I still might not, because nothing I could make up would be what they'd intended.

And yeah... a PM would have been nice. But then it wouldn't have been as anonymous. Or as much of a threat.

Yeah... If I EVER find my fic somewhere and "finished" there will be blood.

The thing is... I did write the end chapters of "Dangers Untold" ages and ages ago. A few years back, I had a reader send me a PM. She had a friend who was in the hospital dying of cancer. Her friend was really into fanfiction and so she read stories to her out loud to pass the time. She wanted to know if I was planning to finish "Dangers" any time soon because her friend really wanted to know how it ended before she died.

It could have been a ploy of some kind, or whatever, but it seemed sincere. I asked a few questions and was satisfied enough by the answers that I agreed to send them a summary of the rest of "Dangers Untold and the final chapter as written ... which ironically (perhaps?) is about transformations from one life to the next (not dying, exactly, but it could be read that way).

Several days after I sent the chapter, I received another message from the friend, thanking me. She said that her friend had passed away the night before, but that before that they'd had a chance to finish the story and it had made her happy. It broke my heart a little. But I've always been glad I did that.

THAT is how you reach out to an author. Well, I would prefer that the person in question wasn't dying in order to do it. But the politeness and sincerity make a huge difference.

~nods~ I took down a WIP in the X-Men fandom, since I knew I wasn't going to finish it, but I posted the outline, notes and bits and pieces of the last chapter to my Yahoo group, since I didn't want people to wonder how it would have ended. But I would have been furious if someone else just decided to take it up and finish it without my permission. :/

Wow. That's really rude. And really arrogant, too. I wouldn't read a continuation of DUST that wasn't written by you. It wouldn't *be* DUST. I'm not here for the story. I'm here because the writing is extraordinary.

I have ten chapters that I haven't finished editing.

I can't even say how excited this makes me feel. I know it will take some time to finish the editing an get it to a place where you feel it's ready to put up, but it's like whenever there was any kind of gossip off of the set of The Avengers. Just acknowledging that there is this thing out there that I'm really excited about and it's being worked on is enough to make me all flavors of thrilled.

Um that message was not only insulting, but kinda creepy? The way publicswish kept saying "we" sounded cult-ish. It actually reminded me of the creepy Bringers in season 7. Either way you did not overreact. People have some SERIOUS social skills problems if they thought that was okay to write!

There have been quite a few entitled little weenieheads who run around fandom doing this sort of thing over the years, and in my experience, it never comes to anything. They're trolls. They have no serious desire to see fics finished, they just want to piss off writers.

It is infuriating, but in the end, they're not worth losing sleep over.
Knife Edge
knifeedgefic at 2012-06-07 14:29 (UTC) (Link)
Oh, probably. And they succeeded in pissing me off.

I did a google search on this particular little twit. They do seem to be attached to an actual person--although always anonymous. It highly amuses me that most of the "reviews" they leave on other sites include detailed complaints about bad punctuation or grammar...

I don't think you overreacted. I have an account on FF.net and love "West of the Moon..." & "DUST" and have favorited many stories in which the author hasn't updated in a long time. As a reader, I have to say what the haywire!! How dare someone put up a message saying that your story will be considered for the public's "adoption"?! Donating the story to the public. Honestly? That sounds like stealing the rights to me. They're pretty much stealing the ownership if they feel that they have to take it upon themselves to take what's already been written and finish it while putting their name on the finished product without the creator's consent (or giving the authorization for it). The voice of the public? Wow, I guess I missed the election.

Authors aren't supposed to be at the mercy of the audience. If real life demands attention, then real life gets dibs. Speaking for myself, I say take all the time you need to finish your story so that you will be satisfied with the result. I'll still look forward to reading what you write when you feel you are in a good spot to do so.

Knife Edge
knifeedgefic at 2012-06-07 18:59 (UTC) (Link)
Well, maybe, maybe not?

I did some searching. It seems as though this does seem to be attached to an actual person. Just one that doesn't have a real account on the sites where she chooses to "review." I've read some of her reviews on other sites and it seems like she legitimately reads stuff. She's just really kind of a twat.

That doesn't negate troll status. It just upgrades her to asshole.
lostboy_lj
lostboy_lj at 2012-06-07 19:26 (UTC) (Link)
That's an even better reason to ignore it. Why give the satisfaction of a reply to some weirdo who can't even spell the phrase "waiting too long" right in a form letter. Seems to me that trolls live for responses/actions that make them feel important.

Then the whole FF.net censorship issue hit yesterday morning. Then this twat.

Wow, just the sheer arrogance and entitlement of this person is astounding. I'm just flabbergasted.

I completely understand your decision to remove your stories, but as a fan, I'd like to let you know: a lot of us don't mind that a good story is unfinished; I know I don't. Does the fact that it doesn't (yet) end, may never end, invalidate or somehow diminish all of the lovely writing up until that point? Make the dialogue less memorable? Nah. Some of the favorites that I read over and over again are unfinished and likely always will be.

Please don't feel embarrassed about your unfinished work; what you do is a gift to a community, and that community should be grateful to receive whatever you're able to manage. Sometimes inspiration just takes you in another direction, and I just cannot understand how a person reading this lovely work *for free*, feels they have the right to bitch you out over that.
Knife Edge
knifeedgefic at 2012-06-07 19:03 (UTC) (Link)
I'm usually one of those in the "I don't mind unfinished stuff" camp. I love to reread favorite stories even though I know there is probably no chance of an update.

Hope is such a cruel thing. :)

But in the case of these two particular stories Labyrinth stories: the ONLY place they were posted was in the Pit of Voles. And the entitlement queens there really get on my nerves. This is the worst, and more infuriating of the comments I've gotten, but there have been plenty up till now with demands that I update. Add to that the rumors flying about fics being yanked for minor infractions of the "No MA content" rule... yeah, I don't feel bad about taking them down.

Why would anyone think they have the right to tell you what to do with your fiction. I don't blame you for pulling them. I'll be a little sad that I can't go back and review them to remind myself why I loved them, but then that just means that when they are posted whole, they will be so much better because I probably won't remember them as well. I'll get to read them with fresh eyes and appreciated them all over again.

I hope that reviewer is happy now though. Running his or her mouth got the story completely gone.

I think you were right to be angry.

I fully understand and approve of your decision to take the unfinished stories down from FF-net!

But I am very, very happy that some of your unfinished stories can still be found here.

Personally, I just love to reread DUST and just be happy with the knowledge that it is very likely that someday there will be more to read in this wonderful tale. And your stories are YOUR stories! You are an incredibly talented story teller and no one can or should continue your work. The ideas, the plot, everything in your stories belongs solely to YOU!

Thank you once again for just being you.

We the public on fanfiction claim ownership? Donating its creative entirety?

As an attorney and writer, this pisses me off in every way possible and it's not even my work so no, I don't think you overreacted. This person desperately needs a lesson in common sense. You can't "donate" something you don't own or "claim ownership" of something that already belongs to someone else. It's called stealing.

Re: Dang, NO!

I'm just sorry this happened to you. Things of this nature are, to me at least, a deterrent to writing; the overly entitled few that act like complete jackasses ruin the pleasure of writing, and make me want to spite them. (That could just be me, though, so...)

Write in your own time, at your own pace, and for your own reasons. Muses are evil bitches as it is, and this sort of thing doesn't help.

Well. What a lot of BS, and hurtful BS to boot. However, it might be time to re-read Neil Gaiman's wonderful essay, "George R. R. Martin Is Not Your Bitch". He thoroughly smacks down anyone who thinks that they have any say whatsoever in what, when, and how much a writer produces. I fully understand wanting MOAR, because that's just human nature. But really? Anybody who would take it to this point must sit down and shut the fuck up. The nerve!

Re: bitch please...

First of all... LOVE your icon. :) Love me some Balthier.

Second, most of the rest of my stuff is still up over at FF.net.

"Immortal Love" - (Jareth/Sarah pairing) is the first full fic I ever wrote and completed. The two fics I took down were the sequels and are arguably better than the original, but both were uncompleted, and I hadn't updated them in something like five years. If you read this one and desperately want the sequels, email me and I'll send you a PDF copy of what I'd had posted.

What You Wish For - Labyrinth, Jareth/Sarah pairing. This is a stand alone, novella length that I'm still rather proud of. IMHO, it's better than the other one.

The Price of Dreams - Labyrinth, Jareth/Sarah. This is a short, one shot. It's also a very different style from what I normally write. I'd nearly call it poetic.

Turn - This one is also available on my LJ. It's a short Labyrinth oneshot. Jareth/Sarah. Kind of oddish, and if you're not super familiar with the film you might miss some of the subtle things going on in it.

In the Belly of the Beastie - I think I also have this one up here. It's a Pirates of the Caribbean fic, set between Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. I kind of love this fic to pieces. It's the story of what happened to Jack after he was swallowed by the Kraken, and before we find him in the Locker at World's End. Oddly, I wrote it BEFORE AWE came out, and still managed to get the Locker right.

Crewed By The Damned - another PotC fic, also set between DMC and AWE. This one is another of my favorite short fics. Elizabeth, dealing with her actions at the end of DMC has a little crisis of conscience.

There's also a teeny little "Alice in Wonderland" (Tim Burton verse) drabble up called "Killing Time"

<3 you

There are so many lovely fics out there that were never finished, so honestly I can see how this train of thought got started.

But wow. To go to an author (especially when it's obvious you're still active!)
"we the people (by which I mean me and my only friend) claim your story in the name of the internets and are going to get someone else to finish it (meaning probably us and probably badly)"
The hell, seriously.

Though I do wish sometimes that, with permission obviously, authors who lose interest in a fandom would be able to pull a Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson but without the dying part.

Re: <3 you

Might I just add: I am so sorry about Robert Jordan's untimely death but also thrilled about Brandon Sanderson's writing and the fact that we will get an ending.

Of course, it's an entirely different background with Jordan's widow being involved in the chosing of the author (and perhaps Jordan himself, too I can't remember). Sanderson however has Jordan's notes and instructions concerning the ending of my once favorite fantasy series of them all "Wheel of Time".

The writers on FF-net (and I am one of those, I am shamed to admit) who stop writing on a fic are probably, and hopefully still around somewhere. It's their stories and only with their consent should a story be continued by any other than the author herself.

I followed a fic whose author began updating after 8 (EIGHT!) years, bless her. So never say never. :-) Muses are skittish and unreliable but they do sometimes reappear and bless them when that happens.

All I can say is "Geez". That's just ridiculous.

Hey Knifeedge, just commenting to say I added you because I'd love to see more fic, I was following DUST religiously and read all your other work too (even the fandoms I'm not in ;)) so I could hardly stay away!

Also, the review sounds as if they're trying to be funny while voicing a common complaint (it does happen often that people stop halfway through a story, in every fandom, for whatever reason). From the reader I understand the sentiment, but for crying out loud, they should obviously be able to realize that a writer's life, let alone a FAN writer's life, is not about the reader's satisfaction.

That said, I have once "threatened" a fan writer to finish their story for them, but that lead to many years of a wonderful friendship ;)

It's late so I'm sort of worrying I managed to voice my comment wrong as well, so just adding I've had the same type of comments (though never so elaborate!) from reviewers as well because I was too slow finishing a particular story or even gave up on a plot entirely. It's apparently hard to realize that people have a life and that the (fan) writing, while very very enjoyable, is not exactly the thing that comes first in time management.

Good grief, Some People!
I've re-read Dust several times and even though it is unfinished, still enjoy it very much. Very subtle progress in the romantic area, perfect tone and voices and plenty of details to flesh out the environment. East of the Sun is a huge favorite of mine, too.
Carry on at your own speed and don't mind the fan goons.

That is all :-)

Go you!

I am one (of the many, I'm sure) who has been reading your fiction for almost as long as you've been posting it. I love your work. And yes do I want you to publish the end to Dust? Of course, but I want to see how YOU end it. Not someone else. I'm glad that you took them down (even though now I'll have to check manually for updates lol). What she was suggesting without your permission is obviously plagiarism (as I'm sure you know). It does not matter what "thepublicswish" thinks or says because as a part of the public I disagree. I eagerly await the finish of your work but realize that you have your own life. Thank God so do I. Can you imagine being so sad and alone in your life that all you have time to do is troll around harassing people? :) Good luck unpacking all those boxes.
